Grey2Green: Sustainable Transformation of Communal Outdoor Spaces

Unkept and uncared for open spaces were of particular concern to local residents in the urban centre of the borough. Starting an ongoing dialogue with these communities provided a departure from assumed solutions to such issues to an approach which put local residents at the centre of driving improvement to create more sustainable local environments. In the first year, 3 community-led schemes were developed securing resource through a number of innovative, community-driven methods to improve these spaces. As a consequence of Grey2Green, Great Yarmouth Borough Council received ‘National Empowering Authority’ status, 2008-2010. This approach continues across the borough in a range of settings and locations.
